The Howard family were listed in the 1881 census in Sidney Township, although at the time of the 1871 census they had been living in Belleville. The 1871 assessment roll for Samson Ward of Belleville locates the family on lot 13 on the east side of Church Street, which was just south of Dundas Street, approximately where the CP railway line is today. At that time, Richard's wife Mary Ann (born Mary Ann Turner, also listed as African), was still living with them. The Howards are not listed in the 1879-1880 Hastings County Directory.
Margaret (Maggie) was married in Toronto to Jesse Gaines on 31 December 1884. Jesse's family were listed in the 1871 census in East York. He and his parents, Albert and Lavinia, were all listed as having African origins.
William Henry Howard married Sarah Alice Brucker in Napanee on 7 May 1887 and the couple were still living in Napanee, on Water Street, at the time of the 1921 census, when William was working as a labourer.
