This property is the former home of Thomas S. Carman at 228 Dundas Street, Belleville. It was originally built in 1875 and in 1929 it became home to the Canadian Department of Agriculture’s Dominion Parasite Laboratory. This lab was responsible for breeding insects which would destroy other bugs.
Unemployed entomology graduate Thelma Finlayson spent six weeks reading in the library in 1936 and talking to the staff. Eventually she was offered a job and became the first woman to be employed there. She went on to be a respected and internationally recognized research scientist.
