This photograph is of a salvage operation which took place in February 1912 to rescue a brand new lightship. The vessel sank in high winds at the dockside of the Racine Boat Manufacturing Company in Muskegon, Michigan, on Boxing Day 1911, just days before it was due to be delivered to its new owners, the United States government.
The vessel was the Milwaukee No. 95 and it can be seen here with the tug Ruby. This belonged to the East Shore Dredging Company, the firm responsible for raising the sunken ship.
